King Alfred of Wessex, the only sovereign in British history on whom the epithet “Great” has been traditionally bestowed, never ruled over the whole of Great Britain, nor even over the whole of England. Yet after his death he stood in the memory of his nation not only as a great bulwark against their enemies and as a liberal patron of learning and letters, but was even fantastically reimagined as the creator of the English navy, the jury system, and the University of Oxford. Join James and Thomas Banks on March 7th when they discuss the Alfred of history and of legend, and attempt to describe this most admired of Saxon kings.

Time: March 7th, 7PM Eastern
