Tolkien & The Old English Tradition

We have all heard of J.R.R. Tolkien as the best-selling fantasy author of The Lord of the Rings, but it is less common to meet him as a scholar and critic. This webinar will focus on Tolkien’s lifelong relationship with the Anglo-Saxon world to unpack how Tolkien’s roles of scholar, critic, and sub-creator became a threefold cord not easily broken in the face of modern literary theory and pedagogy. Be prepared for a whirlwind tour of early medieval Northern Europe and some dizzying experiences as a time-travelling philologist.
