The Chronicles of Narnia: A Complete Transmutation (Mini-Class)

Price range: $120.00 through $295.00

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis offers readers a dazzling world full of Greek myth, medieval cosmology, modern philosophy, and an enduring love for story. While the series might appear to some as an apparent grab-bag of creative fixtures from time’s attic, the Chronicles in both genre and form weave together these disparate threads into an ordered tapestry which remains beautiful to this day. In this seven-session mini-class, Jenn Rogers will highlight some of the imaginative and scholarly threads that were “drawn into Narnia,” to use one of the chronicle’s subtitles, concentrating first on Lewis’s creative context, and then on the structure of the series as whole and of each chronicle in turn. We will ask why Narnia is “chronicled”, what holds the series together, how Lewis’s literary theory is woven into these stories, and whether elements gathered across time and cultures can be granted entry into an Oxford don’s imagination. Readers will hopefully be able to appreciate the Chronicles as one of the final iterations of the story Lewis told over and over again, and delight in the layers of imaginative vision that have made Narnia’s history an enduring tale for all ages.
