A Dream Both Strange and True: Following the Golden Thread of the Alice Books (Mini-Class)
$120.00 – $295.00
With hundreds of thousands of copies on the shelf, the Alice books seem to occupy a central place among the undisputed classics of the 19th century- and indeed of all English literature. It quickly becomes clear that this is no accident, but rather that these works of Nonsense have been carrying on a rich conversation with all other stories and that, contrary to many of the unsensical rumors floating about, Lewis Carroll was actually weaving a great synthesis into the Alice books and spinning out for the reader a golden thread that would lead to a vision which enfolds the entire cosmos.
This class will pick up that golden thread and follow it through the Alice books until we come at last to see that no journey, and least of all Alice’s, is taken without a purpose (or porpoise as the Mock Turtle would say). Along the way, we will find ourselves drinking deeply from the springs which Lewis Carroll himself drank from, and so learning to walk within that landscape of the imagination which he laid out for us.
It is recommended, though not required, that those who are interested in preparing for the class should consider watching the Through a Looking Glass Dimly webinar which laid the groundwork for the architecture of this class. There is no required reading other than, of course, the Alice books themselves. Perhaps we, like Alice, will find that a dream may be both strange and true. And, in the words of Robert Graves: “Not only in the main True, But as true as anything you’d swear to, The usual three dimensions you are heir to.”
