Catullus 64 - a "mini-epic" poem by the Roman Republican poet Catullus
Ovid's Metamorphoses - highlights from Ovid's epic poem about mythological transformations (Selections will be provided by instructor)
Ab Urbe Condita Book 1 - The first book of the Roman historian Livy's magnum opus which features Roman mythological themes as he explores what the Romans said about their earliest origins.
City of God by Augustine - Particularly the portions of the book where Augustine treats Roman myth and its relationship to the Christian faith (Selections will be provided by instructor)

Advanced Latin Reading Elective is primarily aimed at House of Humane Letters students who have completed Latin 3 (the capstone Latin class for our Latin program) and are proficient in reading Latin but might still like additional help through various important texts in Roman literature. Students from outside of the program who are already fully proficient in reading Latin may join.
We will offer an enrollment to a reading group that will be led by Dr. Anne Phillips. Students will meet twice a month to ask any questions they might have or to read through passages. There will be a list of texts provided for students to tackle primarily on their own, though they will be able to read with fellow students and receive assistance from Dr. Phillips as needed.
Separately from the reading group itself, Dr. Phillips will offer periodic mini-classes throughout the school year that will serve as introductions to authors and texts to help give students greater context for their readings. Students can choose from these mini-class a la carte, which will be priced separately and require a separate registration. The mini-classes are not required to be in the reading group, though the students may want to participate in the mini-classes to help them tackle the texts more effectively.
The theme of this year's Advanced Latin Elective is "Myth in Literature" with a list of titles included on the side panel.
