CLASS DESCRIPTION
Welcome to a year of Beowulf in the Anglo-Saxon literary tradition! In this 32-week class, we will dive into the story, language, and world of Beowulf, translating it line by line as we go. The first term will include basic grammar review, a study of alliterative meter, and early essays in translating alliterative verse. As we find our translating feet, we will work steadily at translating Beowulf throughout the second term. The class will also serve as an introduction to translation theory, manuscript studies, and literary scholarship. By the end of the year, students will have a first attempt at translating Beowulf under their belts and a reading understanding of Anglo Saxon so they can continue to Anglo-Saxon: Advanced Readings in Poetry and Prose.
This class counts towards either 1 High School Foreign Language Credit and 1 High School Literature Credit.
