CLASS DESCRIPTION

In this year-long class, we will learn the foundations of Old English grammar while being introduced to various literary forms in the language. The first term consists of grammar knowledge, poetry reading, and initial translations. The second term includes more advanced grammar and continued poetry and narrative translations. Students will be expected to do in-class readings. Throughout the year, students will be welcomed into the world of the Anglo-Saxon through lectures on their history and culture. Students who have completed this course should be prepared for translating Beowulf in Year Two.

We will be offering Anglo-Saxon I in the coming school year with a minimum of 15 students. If the class doesn't have enough enrollment to move forward, we will provide a 100% refund to those who have signed up. Should that minimum not be met and you or your child wants to take Anglo-Saxon 1 in order to make it into Beowulf in the Fall, please reach out to Jenn Rogers ([email protected]), and she will arrange summer office and teaching hours to make sure asynchronous students are ready for Beowulf. It is recommended to take the full year of Anglo-Saxon I over the course of the year.

**Students also have free access to the House of Humane Letters Language Tutoring Center for extra assistance.

Asynchronous Option: Students have access to the streaming videos of the course to watch on their own time plus the LIVE Canvas Discussion forum for a full year. Asynchronous students may also submit a midterm and final and receive a grade for the course. The classes are not discussion based and instead focus on the skill and art of reading well. Many students even prefer the asynchronous option because they can pause and rewind when taking notes. (Live students also have access to the course videos to rewatch for note-taking).
